Twenty-five years ago Governor Lilburn Boggs was shot at in his home. Now Detective Calvin Pogue has been hired by the Boggs family to open this cold case. From one end of the Old West to the other Detective Pogue follows clues that lead him relentlessly to the Mormon gunman Porter Rockwell who still isn't making things easy for anyone!

Where to buy it:  Amazon - Barnes & Noble

An attemped assassination that almost took the life of Governor Liburn Boggs - while sitting in his home with his family one evening.  Shot through the head and neck, doctors didn't expect him to live through the night.  Not only did he live, but he lived another 20 years after that event.

This was a very interesting read.  I am not familiar with much of the history of the United States, so for me if was even more intriguing.  When I first picked this book up - to be honest I had a hard time getting into it.  But once I got through the first few chapters I couldn't put it down!  The author had a way with the dialogue that keeps the reader engaged through out the story.

I've always been a fan of murder mysteries and the 'who done it' type stories.  So this was right up my alley.  We meet members of Boggs family - who have hired the Pinkerton Detective Agency to look into the Governor's attempted murder years earlier.

I did a couple of Google searches after I finished the book to see who was a real person and who wasn't.  The author did an amazing job for integrating both into the story.  We meet characters based on:  Joseph Smith and Porter Rockwell.  Both men were involved with Boggs in the "Missouri Executive Order 44" also known as the "Extermination Order".

Rod Miller did an incredible job with this novel and I'm going to look into some of his other works!  Anyone who loves historical fiction and novels based on historical events will love this novel.
