Synopsis:

As Napoleon pursues his plans for the invasion of England, English operative Augustus Whittlesby gets wind of a top secret device, to be demonstrated over the course of a house party at Malmaison. The catch?

The only way in is to join forces with that annoying American socialite, Emma Morris Delagardie, who has been commissioned to write a masque for the weekend’s entertainment. Even so, it should leave plenty of alone time with Augustus’ colleague (and goddess), Jane Wooliston, who has been tapped to play the heroine.

Or so Augustus tells himself. In this complicated masque within a masque, nothing seems to go quite as scripted… especially Emma.

Another fabulous addition to the Pink Carnation series.  We find Jane still in France with poet Augustus Whittlesby (who writes the most horrid poems) - whom we've met previously in several of the P.C. books.  Like the previous adventures of Jane - they are out to thwart the newly named Emperor Napoleon from attacking England.

Augustus is a fun character, his writings are just plan awful - but they hide a completely different message.  Which in the past has helped Jane and her band of spies.  He has gotten himself involved with Emma Delagardie - not romantically - but to help write a masque for Napoleon and his family.  At first he didn't want to help, but he couldn't say no to Emma.

As all the other P. C. novels - I was glued from the first page right up to the last.  I love how Lauren weaves the modern characters Eloise and Colin into the story.  From the very first book - I adored those two, and Eloise's adventures in the archives and at Colin's family estate; digging into the past to discover what happens to our band of historical characters.

My one and only complaint with this book was there wasn't enough Colin and Eloise!  I really want to find out what is going to happen with them as a couple and whether she will go home to the USA or stay in England with Colin!  I really can't wait for the next book in the series!
