A Day in the Life

I am thrilled to be part of the Day in the Life of blog feature! What a fun, creative way to get to know people!

Here is a little bit about The Lit Bitch.

Inquiring minds always want to know what my real name is. It’s Anne.

My day job: High school Registrar. For those of you who don’t know what that is….I handle all new student enrollment, curriculum evaluation, graduation, transcripts, and scheduling as well as a host of other duties but this gives you a general idea. I’ve worked in education for 6 years.

My educational background: BA in English Literature and Writing with Film Concentration, minor in History. I also graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Blogging background: I have been blogging for a little over two years. I started blogging after a horrendous travel experience that I simply had to document so I would never forget the details. Then I started reviewing books. Somehow the blog evolved into a full time deal instead of just a fun little hobby.

I love blogging and book reviewing. I have met lots of great people who share my interests and have opened my eyes to a whole new world of wonder.

Review genres: Classics, Fantasy, Historic Fiction, YA, Pararomance, Contempo fiction….pretty much anything. I’ve been averaging about 50 books a year from a wide range of genres.

Random facts: I love Chai tea lattes from Starbucks. I’m terrified of flying insects. I have 11 tattoos. I am an INTJ personality type. If I had to describe myself in one word it would be unyielding.

Here is what a typical day looks like for me:

My daily routine: get up, be amazing, go back to bed.

Ok, that’s over simplifying it a bit. Now that we’ve established my daily schedule, let’s elaborate on the ‘be amazing part’ of my routine.

4:45 am Get up

Alarm springs to life. I am a total morning person and I love waking up before everyone else. It’s the only time of day I can clear my mind and enjoy the calm before the storm.

5:00 am Shower and get ready for work.

While I’m getting ready I listen to the local news on my TV so I can know what’s going on in the world.

I let the dogs in and out a few times and feed them after I get out of the shower.

6:00 am Eat breakfast and check my email, blog, Goodreads, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.

This is my time to respond to book review requests, approve blog comments, check the latest giveaways on Goodreads, and then share all kinds of fun bookish info on Facebook and Twitter. Sometimes I read the local newspaper online.

Sometime between 6 and 6:45 I get my husband up, he doesn’t believe in an alarm clock, don’t ask me why, and then I play with my dogs for a bit before leaving for work.

A typical breakfast: chocolate flavored coffee and an Egg Beater veggie omelet.

6:45 am Leave for work.

7:00 am Start work

Since I work at a high school my day is pretty much the same as any school employee….I put out fires. I go to work, troubleshoot every problem, question, and crisis known to man until I can’t take it anymore and then I go home.

I am not a teacher, so I get to deal with all of the general public….teachers, support staff, students, counselors, parents, other administrators….you name it! I never get the same thing twice, every person I meet needs something entirely different than the person before them so that helps keep my day interesting.

Working in a high school is super fun though, they should make a reality show about public school workers...it’s really that entertaining.

I keep myself sane by listening to my fav Pandora station (usually piano music but sometimes country or alternative music when the kiddos are gone for the day).

8:00 am Work

9:00 am Work

10:00 am Work

11:00 am Work

12:00 pm Lunch and reading time!

Sometimes I have lunch with my husband (who also works at the same high school that I do) but on days we don’t have lunch, I usually read for an hour.

Typical lunch: Chicken Cesar salad or spinach salad.

1:00 pm Back to work

2:20 pm Kids release from school

My office finally begins to quiet down for the day!

3:30 pm Off Work

The best part about working at a school is that I am off at 3:30 every day. I use to get summers off until they changed my job classification, now I work 12 months but still, you can’t beat the office hours.

4:00 pm Go horseback riding and play with my dogs

I usually ride/train with my horse for at least an hour 3 times a week. For those of you who don’t know, I’m an English style rider (hunter/dressage) If it’s a non- riding day then I usually go for a long bike ride or take my dogs for a walk around the park.

5:30 pm Start making dinner

By the time I am done with my riding, bike ride, or dog walking it’s about 5:30 and I start making dinner. Since my husband and I both work at the same school we are off at the same time, but he is also a football coach so that means he has practice every night during the fall until 6.

My favorite weeknight meal: spinach salad with feta cheese crumbles and light balsamic vinaigrette dressing, grilled chicken breast drizzled with coconut oil, and French green beans sautéed with olive oil, almonds, and minced garlic. Low cal/fat and delicious! Not to mention it’s fast (20-30 mins for this entire meal!).

5:30-6 pm Check my email, blog, Goodreads, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.

While dinner is cooking and I’m waiting for my husband to get home, I check all my social media outlets and email. Once I do that I read for a while until my husband gets home. I rarely watch TV but if I am in a TV watching mood, sometimes I’ll turn on one of my fav weeknight shows (Boarder Wars, The First 48, Taboo).

6:30 pm Eat dinner

By 6:30 my husband is usually home from football practice and we eat dinner and catch up on our days. While we talk our dogs are busy putting on their best ‘feed me I’m starving’ faces so they can have a little bit of human food. It takes all of our will power to ignore them.

7:00 pm Read

This is my prime time reading time. This is the only time during my day that I can read uninterrupted. Reading is my way of decompressing and escaping into a different reality….there is nothing like reading. I usually try and read for 2 hours every night.

8:00 pm Continue reading

9:00 pm Watch TV

My husband and I usually try and watch a little TV together after I’m done reading and he’s done with school work. If it was a Sunday night, we would watch our favorite TV shows (Game of Thrones, True Blood, Downton Abbey). But on a typical night we just watch whatever is on, usually The First 48, Boarder Wars, Locked up Abroad, Taboo reruns.

10:00 pm Go to bed.

Our dogs join us nightly and we watch TV until we fall asleep, usually around 10.
