A Day in the Life - Ella Quinn

My typical day has changed so much from when I first began writing. It used to be that I’d lay in bed, plotting out my scenes, then get up, feed the household menagerie, eat breakfast and start writing. Sometime around two o’clock I’d stop to eat, then carry on. I did this for six months. It netted me the first three books, and about fifteen pounds. When I attended my first Romance Writers of America chapter conference in New Jersey, I was shocked, shocked I tell you to discover I couldn’t zip my pants all the way, and I had pitches!

After that my routine changed. I started exercising first thing, after feeding the animals. Other than that, I wrote all day. Nanowrimo was going on and I finished in two weeks, then went back to editing book #3. I’d also added critique partners, so in addition to writing my own stuff, I was critiquing them as well.

Shortly thereafter I got an agent. That’s when my routine really started to change, I had to learn social media. Some things I’d sort of set up, Facebook, twitter, and my blog, but to make sure I was doing it all correctly, I took a class, and my writing day changed again.

I had to focus on building a following, and I did. These days, I begin with exercise (after feeding my four-legged children), eat breakfast and drink my tea while I check email accounts. (currently 5 of them), then take a look at Facebook and Twitter. Because I like to support my author friends, I also swing by their blogs or blog stops, comment and tweet. All of this takes most of the morning. Then I start to write. I am not a night owl, and if I write when I’m tired, what looked find at the time, looks like gobble-gook the next day.

Because it’s important to read, I stop around nine PM and read for an hour or so before bed.

After a book is finished, and I’m in the editing stage, I have a little more time to do other things that get lost in the shuffle, but now that my books are releasing, I’ve had to spend more time on the marketing aspect of writing, and even though my friends, agent and editor tell me not to feel guilty about not writing every day, it hasn’t helped.

I’m afraid I’m making this sound like drudgery, but the fact is that I wouldn’t do anything else. I also have a wonderful view of the ocean to keep me at my computer. I do miss not being able to write all day, but I’d rather do it without the weight gain.
